To all the mothers in our little community, have a happy mothers day. Kick back and relax, and I hope you get indulged by those who love you.

Just got back from a day of antiquing and a lovely lunch out at Honeoye Falls - a wonderful day with Richard, Kate and Adam.

At one place, I found a pickle tray that matched a set I got from my grandmother. That was pretty cool. At another, we found several books for our collection - one on defense of the Eugenics movement and another to add to my collection of Victorian manners and household nehaviors. Also found a copy of Ten Nighs in a Barroom, a story from the 1890s that was the basis for the first show my Dad and I ever did together. And one truly ugly piece for our family tradition of sharing "dog gists" with one another. I won't go into the long explanation of the game and the name that started this all off, but what it has become is a sharing of truly ugly things that were actually used by someone (they cannot be created by the giver). They cannot cost more than $15 (used to be $5 when this all started years ago). And they must be displayed in a highly visible location in your home for 30 days after receiving the gift - and you are honor bounf not to tell guests why you have that ugly thing if they are bold enough to ask. You must defend it. You can tell them the truth after the 30 days is over. We have loads of fun finding things for this gifting ritual. And lots of laughs along the way. My find today was a large ceramic frog with a yellow crown wearing a blue top coat and a red partterened scarf - and playing a lute. It is absolutely and totally ugly. And my mother in law will get it on her birthday. I cannot give it to her for Mothers Day because Kate and Adam have a gold fish pair of salt and pepper sharkers covered with glitther and something fuzzy for tomorrow ;D

Sounds like you had a sensational day; the pickle tray is a great find. I normally find nothing at all - but pickings are slim since eBay raised its ugly head.
I love your game, but you make your frog sound adorable. Are you sure you'll be able to part with him after having him for 30 days?

Sounds like a great day and terrific finds, Beth. I love your gift-giving game.
It's not quite Mother's Day here yet, but tomorrow I'm going out of town to a friend's parents' place for a combination Mother's Day And Every Other Event From The Month of May day. I was going to beg off, because it's a bit of a drive, but my friend tricked me and had her mother phone me at work on Thursday to extract a promise that I'd show up. You can't say "no" to certain moms. She's one of them. I'll be nice.
What did you get up to today, WS?

A bunch of us got together and took my mum out to a local Lebanese restaurant. We had a big banquet and cracked some nice bottles of wine, then rolled around to my brother's for some coffee and bickies (Tim Tams of course). I got caught out because I didn't buy mum a present and everyone else did . See, it's her birthday in late May and she usually prefers to get one then. Ooops. For Beth, I bought her a cream wool scarf, and Liam got her a coloured glass fish. Haven't seen Cail for a while, so I don't know what he'll get her. We all had a good time catching up. Lots of us have changed jobs lately, so we had this hysterical time fishing out business cards and passing them around. Even my 83 year-old mum had one!

I can assure you that the ridiculous frog is not anywhere near adorable....just a real headscratcher (as in while scratching your head you are thinking 'why in the world would anyone make anything this ugly?')
We spent the actual Mothers Day around the house. Kate and I baked fresh cinnamon rolls. We talked and played with the pups (when Kate and Adam are vitising we have 5 dachshunds in the house and it is quite entertaining). Went down the road and saw my mother in law. Had a lovely visit. Many sweet and indulgent gifts. I received 2 new stepping stones for our gardens (we have one of a kind stepping stones only on the red stone paths - it has been fun gathering them over the years) and a new bird bath to replace my 20 year old one that has certainly seen better days. It is lovely and perfect.
