From mediamatters.org/On Fox News, Gingrich echoed distortion that EFCA "tak[es] away your right to a secret-ballot vote before being forced to join a union" On Fox News' Happening Now, Newt Gingrich echoed a common distortion employed by opponents of the Employee Free Choice Act, claiming that it "tak[es] away your right to a secret-ballot vote before being forced to join a union." In fact, the legislation does not eliminate employees' rights to a secret ballot; as The New York Times reported, "Business groups have attacked the legislation because it would take away employers' right to insist on holding a secret-ballot election to determine whether workers favored unionization." Read More Media make false comparison of inauguration costsLeading up to President-elect Barack Obama's swearing-in ceremony, several media outlets have advanced the claim that Obama's inauguration will cost significantly more than President Bush's 2005 inauguration. Citing "estimates" ranging from $150 million to $170 million in total costs for Obama's inaugural events, the outlets have compared the purported total costs in 2009 to the approximately $42 million in private funds spent on Bush's 2005 inauguration. However, these outlets omit the additional costs of security, transportation, and other expenses incurred by federal, state, and local governments in conjunction with the events in 2005 while including them in the projections for the 2009 events. Read More Will falsely claimed 2006 extension of Voting Rights Act "was based on the evidence used for the 1975 extension" In his Washington Post column, George F. Will falsely claimed that the 25-year extension in 2006 of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act "was based on the evidence used for the 1975 extension." However, as the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia wrote in a May 2008 ruling, before extending Section 5, Congress "held extensive hearings and compiled a massive legislative record documenting contemporary racial discrimination in covered states." Indeed, the House and Senate Judiciary Committees examined evidence of discrimination since 1982 -- the year of the last major reauthorization -- in extending the VRA. Read More

Flipping through the channels on TV this morning, I'm pretty sure there's really only one big news story today...the inauguration. Such large crowds and cold weather in D.C., I hope nobody gets hurt out there. The coverage looks like the crowds in Times Square on New Years Eve, but without the alcohol.
Though, I'm quite content to watch on TV or catch the highlights of the speeches when they're replayed later. Not much could motivate me to stand out in the freezing cold amidst huge crowds and probably without enough toilets (the thought of using a porta potty in this cold is even worse! *shudders*).
