Its a girl - Dokkoon gives birth at Melbourne ZooJanuary 16, 2010 - 11:48AMMelbourne Zoo's Asian elephant Dokkoon has finally delivered her calf - a female - the first baby elephant born in the zoo's 147-year history. After weeks of round the clock monitoring, and enormous anticipation, Dokkoon became the first elephant in Australia to give birth to a female calf and also to deliver a baby conceived by artificial insemination. Melbourne Zoo Director Kevin Tanner said the calf was alert and active when it was born at 1.10am (AEDT) on Saturday. Melbourne Zoo director Kevin Tanner said the calf was alert and active. "While we are all thrilled with the safe arrival, there has been no time for celebrations," Mr Tanner said. "The calf was alert and active from birth, and since then the dedicated elephant team have been focussing on allowing mother and baby time to recover from the birth and to establish a bond. ""It is vital that they have time to themselves, so we need to ask the community to be patient and understand why Dokkoon and baby are not on display as yet. "They will remain in the barn for a while until the vets and curators are comfortable that they are ready to go outdoors." Dokkoon had been expected to give birth around Christmas and then the zoo was hoping for a New Year's baby after her 22-month pregnancy. 22 month pregnancy. Yikes! Apparently the mother can control when she delivers, at least to a degree. So that would be an upside - you could hold off until after you'd finished the latest Attwood.

Baby everythings (including humans) just have that wide-eyed innocent look, don't they? I love the shot where she's standing under her mother's tummy. Adorable.
