that asks if you'd like to log in by way of a "social networking site" and then there are a bunch of buttons representing facebook and twitter and I don't know what else.
Two things:
Does anyone know what that means, exactly?
And has anyone tried it?

I've never twittered, and I unfriended myself at FB--so I can't help.

I don't understand the utility of Twitter at all. FB I have so I can see friends' vacation pictures, because no one actually prints photos any more (save me, I think) and it's the quickest way to share them with friends rather than having everyone over for a slideshow. I was just curious about the new buttons at log-in, is all, and curious to know if they mattered and/or were helpful to anyone here. And/or does anyone see the utility of them? I didn't put them there; they magically appeared. Thanks, qh, for responding.

They have a certain utility. Elsewhere, I log on very infrequently and have trouble remembering log-in names and passwords. They let me log in via Facebook which means I only need to remember my Facebook log-in and password. Here, I just stay logged in all the time.

I think what it does is it lets you copy a thread you make here to your Facebook wall.
I don't know if it would muck about with your friends, generate spam or whatever.
Other communities seem to be wary of it, and some have disabled it.
Here's Proboards announcement:New Features: Social Login, Registration, Sharing We’re happy to announce three exciting new features for your ProBoards forum! Social Registration We’ve made registering at your forum a breeze. Your visitors can import their registration information from their existing social networks. This saves them time and helps you build a larger community. Social Login After registering using your social network you can also login using the same network! All you need to do when logging in is click on the icon for your social network and we’ll log you straight into your account. If you would like to take advantage of this feature but have already created a forum account, visit your forum profile and click on “Social Networks” to get started. Social Sharing Sharing information with your social networks has never been easier. We have introduced a new button at the top of each thread. Using this button you can share threads you find on Facebook, Twitter, and many other social networks quickly and easily. Please enjoy these new features! Thanks, WS. I guess I should check in with the Powers That Be at Proboards when something new happens, huh? Thanks for the link. I'll look into what it takes to disable the feature. I'm sure all I'll need to do is a bit of sleuthing about. Not that I necessarily think it needs disabling, but it's always good to know how to turn the lights on and off.
Meantime, is anyone here taking a stance one way or the other about the links?

My stance must be 3/4 profile, eyes averted. Proletariat technology lost me at about the advent of cell phones.

I'm afraid I am with ghperson. I no longer enjoy technology for its own sake.

Don't be afraid, Peltigera. We'll protect you. So neither yeah or nay, then? We'll just ignore it? And yes, technology for its own sake lost its glamour with me somewhere around Windows 98.

When cell phones were still fairly new, I worked with a woman who made a big show of always having hers with her--she even had one of those holster things people used to use. She sneered at me when I said I wouldn't have a cell phone for free, and said that it just showed how important she was that so many people could call her. And I told her, if you were really important, no one would have your phone number.

And is that when you flashed her your 3/4 profile?

I like my cell phone because family can always get me (something that has come in handy lately), but I use it as a phone and nothing less. Never use the camera because my camera is better, never access the Internet because my computer does it better. Considering dropping the landline completely soon because I am beginning to see that the cell phone does it better. I wanted to get Richard an e-reader, but my dear (pretend) Luddite prefers the feel of a book in his hand.

I'd never have a Kindle or the like. I want something I can drop without anguish.

Particularly when reading in the bath!
I'm afraid I am tough ion books - I read in the bath and have the books get soggy, I turn over page corners to mark my place, I write in margins and break spines so the book will open flat. Books are for enjoying - although I have some that are treasured, just not most of them. It is the words that matter.
