The last two weeks have been hell for me. I developed serious headaches that got to the point where I was totally non-functional. Each day I'd go to work and then give up and go home after a few hours. (Costly, since I'm a self-employed consultant). I checked in at a doctor to see if I had the flu or something viral. Nothing. I got sent off to get a CT scan of my brain. (I'm an epileptic, so they were being a bit cautious with me on this). Nothing. Today I went to the dentist. Looks like I may have a diseased nerve in one of my molars, which is causing a massive pain in my right temple. It flares regularly and prevents me from eating, working or sleeping. The cure? Probably root canal surgery or maybe a complete extraction of the tooth. Oh joy. And as the doctor pointed out, that might not fix it. So it's also off to the neurologist for more tests. Bliss. I'm about to go on holiday, so this is just a dandy way of spending my leisure time. On the up side, I sure am losing lots of weight with this complete inability to chew anything without agonising pain.

Good to find an upside.
I hope they find what's causing you grief and you're well again, soon.

Bummer, Ws. Nothing worse than mouth/head pain. Not being able to chew treats while on vacation is the ultimate kick in the shin. Hope you feel better very soon and that it is only the tooth/nerve and nothing more.

I'm sorry you have been suffering these problems, Wheelspinner. I find it interesting that the doctor could not find anything, yet your dentist seems to have found a problem. Take a look at this: uncabob.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Can you get the root canal/tooth extraction done BEFORE you head off on holiday? While there's a slim chance it won't resolve the headaches, most of the time, it does. If it's a root canal, that would be best. But, even if you have to get a tooth extracted, the discomfort of that is likely to be nothing compared to the headaches of suffering through a bad tooth during your holiday.

So sorry to hear about this, ws. And i hope you were able to get some relief if treatment had to be delayed.

Cancel your trip if you are having an uppper molar Root canal ... It can Flare up ... Extract and Go ... Less chance of complications ... especially done surgically with sectioning of the three roots and removal separately to prevent breaking maxillary bone and complicating oral-antral fistula ... a hole communication between nasal sinuses and mouth ... Can be easily closed up though ... Good Luck to you WS ... welcome to the world regulated by Murphy's Law ... Been there done That and Gotsk the Polo Shirt ... Even !!

Thanks all.
I got given an antibiotic before I went, which seems to have taken away most of the pain. It was only acute up to last Monday morning (the descent in the plane was hell) and was under control from then on.
I have to see a root canal specialist anyway, so I wasn't going to be able to get it done right away. I figured if I had to be miserable I might as well be miserable somewhere nice and relaxing, which proved to be the case.
Brian I don't know about the USA, but dentists here are not allowed to prescribe drugs so I had to see the doctor to get the treatments.

Glad to hear you're feeling better sufficient that you can get a more permanent fix.
And I'm not Brian, and I don't live in the US, but dentists here can prescribe drugs.

Yes, dentists in the US can prescribe drugs.
I'm also glad you were able to get sufficient treatment to tide you over so you could enjoy your vacation.

Got the news from the dentist today. It was the tooth. Infected root, plus two cracks in the molar. Root canal surgery, here I come!

Good! Glad they found the source and it's fixable. That's always preferable to an inexplicable ailment. I hope the root canal surgery goes well. I've had three or four and not ever had any problem, so I wish the same for you.
