Out of curiosity, what google ads do you guys find at the tops of your screens while you're on what's news?
I get banners for things like Front Sight Academy, Body armor at SecurityProUSA.com, etc.
Just wondering how google selects the type of ad to go on a particular screen. Do they go off an individual's browsing history, or is it the content on a particular page?

They usually match it by keywords to content on the site you're reading. I don't see the ads, though, because I use adblock on Firefox.

I don't know. I just clicked on the Happy Valentine's Day thread and got the Front Sight banner again.
I use Firefox, but I don't block the ads. Every once in a while I find something interesting.

I currently mostly have Chevy ads. Periodically there are ads for ProBoards, which I'm not quite sure I understand the logic of. When I first signed up this board, there was a frequent ad banner for The Christian Online Network. The ads here aren't too bad. Some of the ads on the MSN site about animal abuse and starving children used to freak me out and break my heart. It's possible for us to make this site ad free. I can look into it; I don't think it costs that much, but I don't know how much of an intrusion the ads are.

Body armour on Ebay, How to defend yourself and Personal alarms. All British ads - the URLs are ".co.uk".
Is this a dangerous site to visit seeing that they think we need armour and training?

It's funny because the ads don't seem to mesh with what I'm looking at. And from the discussions, and what I can gather about the interests of the posters I doubt that firefly or peltigera are looking at anything related to karate classes or ballistic vests in their browsing history.
The ads don't bother me, I just think some of the things that come up are funny. If the ads pay even partially for the site, by all means, keep them.

Today there is an advert for telescopic police batons - again a British advert. Not being a telescopic policeman I have absolutely no use for one and if I did buy one, I would be in trouble if I used it.
Actually, I didn't notice the adverts until Wayne pointed them out and, no, they don't bother me - but why the obsession with defensive things?

I currently have three tiny worded ones across the banner. * How To Defend Yourself Discover What The Martial Artists And The Army Don't Want You To Know www.CloseCombatTraining.com * ProtectiveTacticsTraining Security,EMS,Police,Private,Public, WomensGroupsConsultingServices www.cipscanada.ca/home.html * Personal Security Products Personal Products savings Shop for security products & save! gocsi.com So, I don't know about the defensive things, John. There's been no ad yet I find objective, but I have no clue what the criteria is for the ads. It's interesting how we each get different ones. I was looking at an aimoo site the other day and noticed that not only are there ads at the top of the page but interspersed in the threads themselves. I find that annoying to have three legitimate posts then one ad post then a few more member posts then another ad post. Yikes.

Aimoo has become very annoying - but you can pay for Aimoo to be ad-free for a while. I preferred the MSN system - I told them I lived in New Zealand and got no more ads at all.

I'm wondering if I should take it personally...I just opened up this site on my Mac, which doesn't have adblock, and was greeted with giant, hot pink, bold font stating "We delete members unfit to date." And then I 1) realized it was an ad, and 2) it scrolled to tell me it was for the plenty of fish dating website. Hmmph!

hehehe, Calluna! I think there is a box you can click on choices, to prevent the ads. (ad-free Google) My box at the top says... "Proboards dot com.. fast reliable and easy to use.."

It took three times of me just glancing at, and then finally reading, the 'plenty of fish' dating ad to realize it didn't say "plenty offish" which I actually thought was a pretty good name for an ad I didn't want to see anyway.

I thought the same thing I when I saw that, too. I'm fit to date, but I know my wife wouldn't allow it. I thought Beth was going to delete me.

I don't see any. I'm sooooooooo sad, although I probably ought to be working on a sermon rather than seeking a date right now anyway.
