February 7th 2009 - Black SaturdayNation to pause and remember bushfiresJon Pierik February 7, 2010 - 12:00AMAUSTRALIANS will pause today to remember the Black Saturday bushfires. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Victorian Premier John Brumby will lead commemorations at a multi-faith memorial service in St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne at noon. Mr Rudd has declared today a national day of mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast and a minute's silence at noon. Yesterday, at the launch of a book on the bushfires, Foot Steps in the Ashes, Mr Brumby said the anniversary would be painful for many people, and it is ''so important that we're able to tell the story of what's happened … recounting history, relieving some of the pain, but also … it is going to be about inspiring families and communities in the future.'' Today, Governor David de Kretser and his wife Jan will pay their respects in Kinglake, unveiling a memorial bell and gateway at the Mechanic's Institute Reserve. Kinglake West Uniting Church chairman David Johns said people could choose how they would like to remember. Mr Johns has helped organise a morning service and all-day ''open church'' but is uncertain how many people will want to relive the memories of such a terrible day. In Marysville, organisers expect up to 600 people to attend a combined church service at Gallipoli Park, which was used as a refuge for those who stayed and tried to defend their properties.
