A US woman says a school in Ohio is punishing her daughter for not immediately reporting that she saw two classmates having sex on a school bus and for changing her seat during the bus trip. Saundra Roundtree said her 14-year-old daughter had changed seats with a boy who wanted to sit beside a girl on a Dayton View Academy school trip. Ms Roundtree said her daughter told her at home afterwards that she later saw the two having sex but was afraid to say anything. Ms Roundtree notified school officials. She said they told her that her daughter could not attend the eighth-grade prom or picnic. Dayton's WHIO-TV reported the two other students were suspended. www.smh.com.au/world/school-punishes-child-for-witnessing-sex-20110518-1erth.html

The school fails to adequately supervise its students on a school trip and a student gets punished for that lack of supervision... or something.

I've gotta say, I'm staggered that the source of this story is the SMH. What the hell do Sydneyites care about this?
I'm also wondering why Year 8s have a prom in the first place.

Does the SMH have some sort of significance?

It being reported in the Sydney Morning Herald elevates it to the status of an international story. I just have trouble believing this warrants any significance beyond OH, or even just the relevant school district.
